Blanket Bay, Doubtful Sounds

Finally ... we woke to a dry day!  Zoe - you are the good weather fairy!

Blanket Bay Hotel - not to be confused with the posh lodge at Glenorchy.  This is where all the crayfish for export go out destined to the restaurants in Sydney..... All kept alive, picked up by helicopter and transported 18mins to be processed.

The Island is very small, just big enough for the commercial guys to drop off their catches waiting for heli pickups and a place to burn their non-recyclable rubbish.

Bruce burning a bit of our rubbish.

Fisherman use the island for storage of crayfish pots, buoys, lines etc

Had a peep inside the Casteaux - diesel heating! Toasty warm!!

Huge respect to these hardy fishermen down here working in such extreme conditions.  They are very organised, super friendly and helpful to us cruisers.

They are all watched over by Meri from Bluff, of Fishing Boat Radio.  She insists they check in every night. One day I heard her ordering some guy to turn around in the channel of Foveaux Strait as she considered it too rough for him to go out - she was calling in the big guns if he didn't obey!!

Back to the boat.

  1. Another great post but one question remains... did you get your hands on any of that crayfish? Yum!
