A hair raising arrival!
Apparently the conditions in Picton had been calm all day until our arrival! Blustery 36 knot winds rising to gale force squalls of 40-45 knots and flying sea spray, wind funnelling through the valley ... first docking attempt aborted and we headed back into the harbour to wait for the wind to abate.
Went in a second time during a lull but as we reached the dock severe wind squall blew in yet again. Managed to get a bowline to two helpful guys on the dock but the wind pushed our stern out even with the bow thrusts going ... we were bow in to the dock instead of alongside. Inch by inch we maneuvered closer (very calm and skilful Skipper) until finally we could get a stern line around the bollard. It was blowing a hooley and we had sprays of white water all around us.
We were out listening to live music last night when Bruce spied a couple watching a video of Mimu's arrival at the dock. Here are some shots of our arrival along with select pieces of commentary.
