Dusky Sounds

Best seats in the house!

Thursday dawn, mountainous range appears and we can’t see the channel into Dusky Sounds until we are quite close in.

The wheaty bags were a total winner to keep us warm on our night watches!

Motored in slowly and meandered our way into Pickersgill Harbour where we tied to a mooring buoy.  The overnight crossing was tough and we were all exhausted.  The cockpit was a mess with the remains of chocolate chip cookes trodden into the deck and bean bags. We all headed to our bunks for some much needed rest, jobs to follow.

After a few hours sleep, Mimu tidy and ship shape again, a brunch of corn fritters and bacon and feeling much refreshed, at 3pm we up anchored and headed to Cascade Cove, it was another cold, grey and drizzly day but all excited knowing the hard sail was behind us.  Simon and Claire immediately set to fishing and caught blue cod and terakahi for dinner.  Discovered later Cascade Cove was full of shark. We noticed the water was very dark, brackish looking and even when the cod were pulled on board, they looked brown rather than blue.  The brown is from all the tannins.  Fresh water on the surface from 2-5m deep, salt water underneath.  Doesn’t look at all inviting for a dip.  We enjoyed a delicious banquet of fresh cod probably less than 2 hours old.
